The Origin Story

Posted by: Editor on 2/15/2010

No, Foxy Blunt wasn’t invented in the garage of two former tech geeks. That would be Apple. Or maybe it was Hewlett Packard, or IBM, or fill-in-the-blank tech company. (And by the way, we all know that these “garage” stories of men sitting in clammy darkness thinking up billion-dollar businesses are a glorified description of their venture capital meetings, but whatever.)

Instead, our origin story takes place in a much more befitting environment for a new, stylishly forward brand – an outdoor bar in NYC with chilled glasses of white wine on a mid-summers day.  Umm, yes, admittedly it was technically day time, but it was nearly 4 (which might as well be happy hour), so please keep your judgments to yourself, thank you very much.

Anyway, the conversation quickly turned to a regular topic of discussion for us – the what’s next, how do we keep from jumping off the bridge of boredom exchange. We won’t wax on about how disinterested we were in our day jobs, or how often we questioned where we were supposed to be at this point in our lives (painting in a villa in Italy, drinking wine and traipsing around on scooters in flowing white dresses) versus where we actually were (in mundane marketing jobs, drinking calorie-free water and dragging our laptops around in smelly cabs), but we knew we wanted a change.

The big question was how. What could we create that we would actually be excited about? Well, for starters, we knew that it had to be gorgeously designed. Like many, we pride ourselves on our sense of style. We spend a great deal of effort trying to look effortlessly groomed, we plunk down the extra money for the thick, foil-stamped wrapping papers, we drool over the MoMA gift shop catalog. But we also recognize that beauty and style don’t fully describe who we are. We love to joke. We revel in artfully crafted digs. We air our dirty laundry and snicker at our shortcomings. Thus we knew our product had to feed both of these internal beasts.

Long story short, we got on the subject of greeting cards. For years we had paced the aisles of countless stationery stores, torn between the stylish, yet dreadfully boring on one side, and the hilarious, bring tears to your eyes, cartooned eyesores on the other.  Why not both? Why not a slew of products which are actually funny and worth looking at?

And that, dear friends, is how Foxy Blunt was born. Now we just have to actually sell the damn things.
